The goal of the chaplaincy is ultimately to lead students into a more mature attitude toward their lives - academic, social, and spiritual. The chaplain maintains a crucial role in this process of total education of each student. The chaplain promotes a community ideal that teaches the Truth of God made known in Jesus Christ. When applied this ideal will foster in students a commitment to the truth that their lives are a form of Christian service and that learning is an inquiry into the total human experience. Finally it will foster the realization that knowledge, including and extending beyond academia, is the foundation of wisdom, happiness, and fulfillment.
All that we say and do - our words and actions - both inside and outside chapel must be guided by our "respect and dignity of every human being" ( Book of Common Prayer , the Baptismal Covenant, p. 305). Christ therefore entrusts us with a covenant that calls us to acknowledge the value inherent in all members of our school community and to encourage one another to use our reason to explore and experience the Truth of God's Words. Our traditions are largely based on that covenant, and can be summed up in our mission statement that The Canterbury Episcopal School will inspire in each student a love of learning in preparation for college with an emphasis on academic excellence, spiritual development, appreciation of diversity and social responsibility.
